The U.S. Department of Transportation released a consumer warning on June 2nd advising motorists to examine their tires for adequate inflation in addition to signs of tread wear and damage before taking to the road in hot weather. The advisory was issued in conjunction with National Tire Safety Week, June 5-11, and as driving increases with the kick-off of the summer travel season.
As Wausau automobile accident attorneys,we have seen firsthand how devastating auto accidents can be. Check your vehicle’s tires during National Tire Safety Week, and be safe!
Having the proper tire pressure is an important safety issue. Next to the brakes, the tires are perhaps the most important safety devices on your car. Incorrect tire pressure may affect your ability to corner, and brake, and could also cause instability. Worse yet, improper tire pressure can lead to tire failure and perhaps a serious accident. Drivers should also be aware that aging tires and hot weather can be a particularly deadly combination. Older tires are more susceptible to heat stress, especially if they are not properly inflated.
The Department suggests that drivers check their tire pressure before long trips and inspect tires periodically. Don’t look to tires themselves to determine the proper tire pressure. The number on the tire is the maximum allowable air pressure — not the recommended pressure for that tire when used on your vehicle. Check the owner’s manual to find out where the recommended psi is located on your vehicle. This number usually is indicated either on the inside of the driver’s door, the glove compartment door or sometimes on the door for the gas filling compartment.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over the five-year period from 2005 to 2009, nearly 3,400 people died and an estimated 116,000 were injured, in tire-related crashes.
