Wood County Mesothelioma Deaths Double the National Average

 In Asbestos & Mesothelioma

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Wood County, Wisconsin, has a malignant Mesothelioma death rate that is 2.5 times the national average, and higher than any other county in Wisconsin. Of 3,142 counties across the nation, Wood County has the 22nd highest death rate from Mesothelioma.*

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops in the lining of some internal organs (known as the mesothelium). The lungs and chest wall are the most commonly affected areas, but Mesothelioma may also occur in the abdomen and the heart.

The vast majority of Mesothelioma cases are caused by exposure to asbestos. Most often, exposure occurred in the workplace, although sometimes family members get Mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos fibers on a spouse’s or parent’s clothing or other work items. Mesothelioma may not appear until 20-50 years after exposure to asbestos.
