Papillary mesothelioma, also known as well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) is a rare type of mesothelioma. Papillary mesothelioma, unlike most other types of mesothelioma, is primarily diagnosed in women between age 30 and 40. The condition is also seen in men when they are around 50 years old. It is not likely to affect younger members of either sex, and it is very rare in women who are past child-bearing age.
Treatments for Papillary Mesothelioma
Because it is so rare, doctors have not yet reached a consensus on the most effective course of treatment. Therapy usually involves some combination of surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment.
Prognosis for Papillary Mesothelioma
Since this cancer is considered less aggressive, the prognosis is usually more favorable. A study conducted at the Department of Pathology CHU Caen in Caen, France found that, out of 24 patients with well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma, the average survival rate was 74 months, as compared to 9.89 months for patients with diffuse malignant mesothelioma. The ten-year survival for those with WDPM was 30.8%. This may offer little solace to those with papillary mesothelioma, however, given the relatively young age at which it strikes.
