Papillary mesothelioma, also known as well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) is a rare type of mesothelioma.  As a Minocqua asbestos lawyer, I know that mesothelioma is thought of by many as a disease of the lungs.  That is not always the case.  The typical place for papillary mesothelioma to develop, for example, is in the membrane surrounding the abdominal cavity (also known as the peritoneum) of women during their reproductive years.  Although less common, doctors have found WDPM tumors on several of the body’s protective membranes, including the linings of the stomach, colon, small intestine, testicles and female reproductive organs.  Compared to most other forms of mesothelioma, WDPM is much less aggressive, and it does not typically spread to other parts of the body.

Minocqua Asbestos Lawyer: Who is Most at Risk for Developing Papillary Mesothelioma?

Papillary mesothelioma, unlike most other types of mesothelioma, is primarily diagnosed in women between age 30 and 40.  The condition is also seen in men when they are around 50 years old.  It is not likely to affect younger members of either sex, and it is very rare in women who are past child-bearing age.

Treatments for Papillary Mesothelioma

Because it is so rare, doctors have not yet reached a consensus on the most effective course of treatment. Therapy usually involves some combination of surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment.

Prognosis for Papillary Mesothelioma

Since this cancer is considered less aggressive, the prognosis is usually more favorable.  A study conducted at the Department of Pathology CHU Caen in Caen, France found that, out of 24 patients with well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma, the average survival rate was 74 months, as compared to 9.89 months for patients with diffuse malignant mesothelioma.  The ten-year survival for those with WDPM was 30.8%.  This may offer little solace to those with papillary mesothelioma, however, given the relatively young age at which it strikes.
